Easter weekend, a massive 95 car pileup on Interstate 77 in Virginia killed three people and stranded thousands. According to news reports, the “crashes were mostly caused by drivers going too fast for conditions.” The southbound lanes of I-77 were closed for about 12 hours
while emergency workers cleared vehicles from the area. The northbound lanes had to be shut down to allow emergency vehicles access to the area.
My heart breaks over reports like this. These accidents were avoidable! Highway message boards in Virginia had been warning drivers to slow down due to heavy fog in the area since 6:00 a.m. Permanent signs along this stretch also warn of the dense fog risk.
When traveling, we need to remember that getting home safely is far more important than getting home fast. Three people from that accident in Virginia will never make it home. Twenty-five others will go home with injuries. All will have to deal with insurance and car repairs. It’s not worth it. We have to slow down!
Not only that, we have to drive smarter.

Three people lost their lives Sunday, in part because some drivers ignored warning signs and common sense for driving in fog. Our roads are only as safe as the drivers who travel them. Slow down and think.
We all need to drive smarter!
