Summer’s over, but that doesn’t mean family fun has to end. Every weekend, cities and towns across North Carolina — and across the country — host fall festivals that highlight their history, food, activities, and even live concerts. In just a couple hours, you can turn any Saturday into a one-day vacation.
Some fall festivals and events here in North Carolina are:
October 12-14, Autumn Leaves Festival, Mount Airy: Begun as a celebration of the end of tobacco and apple harvesting, this festival celebrates all things fall. Showcasing the rich musical heritage, unique arts and crafts and the foods of the region, this family friendly, award winning festival offers something for the whole family. Pets are not permitted at this festival, so leave Fido home. For more information about this festival in “America’s hometown,” visit the festival website.
October 19-21, Carolina Balloon Fest, Statesville Regional Airport: Combine hot air balloons, arts and crafts, and great food for a unique experience. The 39th Carolina Balloon Fest fills the sky and the senses with the wonder of hot air balloons. For ticket and schedule information, visit their website. Online ticket sales offer a significant savings over at-the-gate ticket sales. Special packages offering hot air balloon rides are also available online.
November 3-4, Wilson Whirligig Festival, Wilson: This unique festival, close to home in nearby Wilson, offers two days of family fun celebrating the whirligig. The festival offers a whirligig contest. To participate, submit an application by October 28. Beyond the whirligig, several bands will perform and kids can play in the “whirli-kids zone.” (Some attractions require a nominal fee.). Visit the Whirligig Festival site for more information on this unique event.
These are just a few of the fall festivals offered throughout North Carolina. For a complete list of festivals, visit the North Carolina Festivals website and find one near you. Summer may be over, but the fall fun continues.
