Where is the Outer Banks?

Located off the coast of North Carolina, the Outer Banks is a 100 mile long string of barrier islands between the Atlantic Ocean and mainland North Carolina.

Small Towns from the North to the South create unique communities, each with its own personality.

These communities are connected by one main road, NC Highway 12.

That means it's more than 3 hours from Corolla in the north to Hatteras in the south.

So, how do you plan a vacation to the Outer Banks?

Step One

Look at all the Outer Banks vacation ideas and decide what you most want to do.

* Beach Days? * Lighthouse tours? * Dining out? * Shopping? * Water sports?

Step Two

Which area is closest to your chosen activities? NORTH: Duck and Corolla CENTRAL: Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head SOUTH: Buxton, Avon and Hatteras Village

Step Three

Pick lodging in the area closest to most of your activities! If your Outer Banks vacation plan includes long days near the wild horses of Corolla, don't stay in Hatteras! You'd spend 5+ hours every day in the car! YUCK!

Will you choose a hotel or a vacation home?

Step Four

Check out the restaurants nearby and add a few to your list! * Reservations needed? * Allergy friendly options? * Local favorites... Like the Apple Ugly at Orange Blossom Cafe?

It's delicious!!!
