Morven Park International Equestrian Center
Well-known in the equestrian community, the Morven Park International Equestrian Center hosts riding competitions and events throughout the year. Many are free for spectators, which locals like to keep a secret!
Each October, Morven Park hosts the Fall Horse Trials, horse event competitions in three equestrian disciplines: dressage, show jumping and cross-country. The summer months feature Polo in the Park.
But, no matter the time of year, there’s likely an event to watch. Or, head to Morven Park to take a stroll on the beautiful grounds or a guided tour of Davis Mansion (admission fee for house tours).
National Sporting Library & Museum
Middleburg, Virginia in Loudoun County is home to the National Sporting Library & Museum, a beautiful space featuring art related to horse sporting events of all kinds.
The research library includes an extensive collection of books about horses and equestrian sports. The children’s library includes great read aloud books that families can enjoy in the many reading nooks throughout the library.
The art museum features permanent and rotating exhibits highlighting horses and equestrian sports of all kinds. Both the library and museum host special events throughout the year with hands on activities and crafts the whole family can enjoy.
Even if you don’t have time for the library and museum, the grounds here are spectacular and open to the public. Statues and art on display have QR codes to learn more.
Salamander Resort Equestrian Activities
Whether you’re staying at the Salamander Resort in Middleburg or just want to stop in to see the horses, the Equestrian Center here is one of its most unique features.
Salamander Middleburg is the first Forbes 5-Star Award winner for its hotel and restaurant and the only Forbes 5-Star spa in the state. Matching luxury with hospitality, historic charm and horses, a stay here will leave you rested and rejuvenated. And, it’s only an hour from Washington, DC!
You don’t have to stay here to visit the equestrian center, though. The center is open daily from 9:00-3:00 with advance reservations required to visit.

Dark Spring Stables Trail Rides
Of course, no visit to Virginia horse country would be complete without a trail ride!
Dark Spring Stables is the place to go for a memorable trail ride for adults and kids aged 12 and over. Children under age 12 will be considered on a case by case basis, with an additional $25 fee if accepted.
Dark Spring Stables currently offers three trail riding experiences:
- General Trail Rides (Currently $95): Learn the basics of horsemanship and then enjoy a relaxing ride through the Loudoun County countryside where you’ll see mountain farms, deer and maybe even an American Bald Eagle!
- Ice Cream Trail Ride (Currently $125 plus cost of ice cream chosen): This experience begins with a lesson in horsemanship. Then, the ride goes through Hillsboro and the Gap with a stop at the Moo Thru Ice Cream Trailer to enjoy a delicious treat. Along the ride, you’ll learn the history of the area and get to see the Old Stone School. (Offered spring, summer and fall.)
- Vineyard Brewery Trail Ride (Currently $200). This is a more advanced trail ride that includes a lesson in horsemanship and the history of the area. But, riders will be free to travel at a pace they are comfortable with and not “just” limited to walking. There’s a stop at Walsh Family Winery (my personal favorite in all the world) to enjoy two glasses of wine or a wine tasting before heading on to Old 690 Brewing Company to enjoy two brews. Both the winery and brewing company are kid and dog friendly. On weekends in summer, you can enjoy live music at each venue.

For younger kids or those new to horseback riding, consider a weekend ride with Chase Run Stables.
Offering a on hour ride along the historic W&OD Trail, beginners and seasoned pros will enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this one hour trail ride. Each ride offered weekends only can accommodate up to three riders. Visit Chase Run Stables to learn more.
