When I was visiting nearby Alton and Grafton, I got to stay at the Green Tree Inn, Elsah, IL bed and breakfast for several days.
The rooms here are quite large, bright and comfortable.
The owners are friendly, and do whatever they can to make guests feel comfortable. That includes providing a common area with comfortable seating to relax at the end of the day. The common area has water, soda, tea and coffee available to the guests 24/7. Guests also have access to a full kitchen.
And, the grounds of this Elsah, IL bed and breakfast are simply beautiful.

The Aerie
More subtly decorated, The Aerie’s earthy color palette is calming. The room has shuttered windows on two walls, a door that opens onto the screen porch, a four-poster queen bed, a private bathroom with a shower/tub combo, a 32 inch flat screen TV and free Wi-Fi. Rates from $155-$175.
The Meadowlark
The largest room at this Elsah, IL bed and breakfast, the Meadowlark is a great choice for a girlfriend getaway! Decorated in a soft green palette, five windows make the space feel especially light and airy. The room looks out on the garden and has access to the screen porch and a sitting porch. With two fullsize beds, a private bathroom, satellite TV and free WiFi, this is a wonderful place to relax and reconnect. Rates from $185-$205.
About Elsah, Illinois
This Elsah, IL bed and breakfast is one of the many historic buildings in the town of Elsah.
Established in1853 by James Semple, a local lawyer, prominent politician and United States Senator, he was also a shrewd businessman. Semple offered free lots to anyone who built houses of stone, using rock from his nearby quarry, of course.
Settlers built about 50 homes here, and dubbed it the “town that time forgot.”
Today, a small history museum near the Green Tree Inn preserves the town’s history and highlights its architecture.
Another home, whose first floor was once the local saloon, has been converted to a general store and gift shop.
The whole place is quaint — seemingly untouched by modern life.
In this quiet town, guests at the Elsah, IL Bed and Breakfast really can relax and recharge. We met several guests during our stay, all who shared our appreciation for the friendly innkeepers, thoughtful amenities, incredible food and accommodations. Some were return visitors — making plans to return again!
